Truck tyre theft can lead to a big loss for transporters and chances are little that tyres can be recovered. Once it reaches the black market it can be sold within minutes.
You can prevent tyre theft through the use of wheel locks. There are some popular wheel lock brands available online as well as companies that specialise in truck locknuts. A standard set of wheel locks, come with 4 – 5 lug nuts and a tool to remove it. It also comes with a special key to remove the nuts from the wheels. However, in the event of a flat tyre, the key is required to replace the tyre. Consider hiding the key in a special compartment in the trucks, to avoid getting stuck on the road with a flat tyre.
Truck wheel locks should be able to handle the high torque and related stresses on wheel nuts of full-loaded trucks driving long distances over rough terrain.
If you do not want to go the truck wheel locks route, consider insuring your wheels and tyres against theft as part of your insurance cover. Another way to prevent tyre theft is to add an alarm with a shock or motion sensor.
If possible, park in a safe and secure area to deter thieves. Ask drivers to turn the wheels when parking as this makes the wheels harder to remove. Prevention is key to becoming a soft target for thieves.
