Fuel accounts for about 40-50% of a fleet’s total operating costs and fuel bills have become a nightmare for a lot of fleet operators. Many fleet operators are unaware of the fact that fuel theft or fuel contamination may also be contributing to the rise in fuel bills.
This was the case with Kobus Lombard of Specialized Transport in Mozambique. Like many other transporters in Africa, Mr Lombard was under the impression that FUEL THEFT from his fleet’s tanks was an unimportant threat facing the industry, and too incidental to affect his fleet. This was all before Mr Lombard was introduced to Globaltrack’s Fuel Solution. In the beginning, Mr Lombard was skeptic about the effectiveness and efficiency of our fuel solution. Much of this skepticism was further fueled by limited knowledge at the extent to which fuel theft and fuel wastage is affecting the industry in general and crippling many fleet operators.
Mr Lombard was offered an obligation free demonstration through Globaltrack’s proof of concept programme. Still filled with doubt, Mr Lombard reluctantly allowed Globaltrack to install the Fuel Probes in ten of his trucks. The proof of concept programme allowed Globaltrack to demonstrate to Kobus how the Fuel Probes work and how it can lower the cost spent on fuel.
Within a few weeks, Mr Lombard noticed a staggering average of a 10% decrease in the cost of fuel used per truck. The initial fuel usage was 46l per 100 kilometers; this was reduced to 41l per 100 kilometers after installing the Fuel Probes.
Given the cost of the fuel probes and installation as well as a monthly subscription fee of $30, the entire system would pay for itself after about three days of operation. After this period of recouping the entire CAPEX (Capital Expenditure), the monthly ROI (Return on Investment) would come to a fuel saving of $525 per month.
That was the moment when Mr Lombard was introduced to the magic of the Globaltrack’s Fuel Solution. By informing his drivers that there is a fuel detection device in the tanks of the fleet, Mr Lombard set in motion the following possible chain of events.
1. He altered the driving behaviour of his drivers. Bad driving is one of the highest contributors to wasteful fuel usage. Knowing that the drivers’ fuel consumption per trip can be monitored, the drivers turned to practice more cautious driving.
2. The other huge phenomenon is FUEL THEFT. Sometimes, drivers steal fuel from the tanks in small negligible quantities to avoid raising alarms, and thereafter sell the stored quantities on the black market. By Mr Lombard informing his drivers of the fuel probes, he possibly deterred some of these small fuel thefts from happening.
If the Fuel Solution is paired with Globaltrack’s tracking units, the fleet operators will be able to receive instant real-time alerts of bad driver behaviour. Globaltrack’s Fuel and Tracking Solutions can monitor both the driver’s behaviour and detect fuel theft. This equips the operator with information of where the problem is and how best to tackle it.
Globaltrack is dedicated to serve clients with reliable solutions that assists in decreasing the overall operational cost; ensuring growth and profitability of our clients.
Globaltrack’s motto is to be “WE UNDERSTAND TRANSPORT” and with a small demonstration, we were able to demonstrate this to Mr Lombard and Specialized Transport.
